Inside Life: Distinguish Yourself in Your Chosen Profession

Inside Life: Distinguish Yourself in Your Chosen Profession

INSIDE LIFE. Do you sometimes wish you had studied a different course or pursued a different career path from the one you presently do? Well, you are not alone in this. I have a Ph.D. in Literature. I often wish my Ph.D. is in Law until I encountered several young Nigerian lawyers who regret studying Law due to the high rate of poverty among Nigerian lawyers in Nigeria, a reflection of the poor state of the country’s economy.

Inside Life. I have met with no fewer than three accountants who said they regret studying such a professional course and ought to have studied Economics. Ironically, I once worked in a big tutorial centre in Ibadan owned by a man who has a B.Sc. and M.Sc in Economics. The man once said he will never advise his child, or anybody to study Economics. Why? I asked him. He said Economists are greatly undervalued in this part of the world.

Inside Life. I have a friend who works with Oxbridge Tutorial College in Lagos. Very brilliant guy. He studied Chemical Engineering. Such a fine course. He once told me that he did not enjoy the course at all, and he ought to have gone for Mathematics or Computer Science. Imagine that!

Even Medicine, the so-called King of Courses in Nigeria is not spared. I teach IELTS and TOEFL. Many of my students are medical doctors who intend to relocate abroad. Many of them said they regret studying Medicine, as the course is not as promising and lucrative as they thought it would be.

Well, we all always believe that the pasture is greener at the other side of the fence, but it may not necessarily be so. Whatever course you studied, try to distinguish yourself. With God on your side, you will go places.
